Most brides never stop to think about the size of their wedding when choosing their bridesmaids because the emphasis is mostly placed on having people their close to participating in the wedding. While that is the goal everyone you're close to may not be able to participate and you'll have to balance between the size of your wedding versus the size of your bridal party. The size of your bridal party should be proportionate to the size of your wedding and the size of your wedding will also dictate how formal it should be. Formal weddings tend to be large, so you can have between 6-10 bridesmaid, the same amount for groomsmen along with your best man, maid/matron of honour, flowers girl and ring bearer. For a long time the purpose of the bridal party was to fool evil spirits. As with many older traditions, the idea was that by dressing the bridesmaids exactly as the bride (creating lookalikes) it would confuse any troublesome spirit in the area.
